2623.02 - MID-YEAR PROMOTION FOR THIRD GRADE STUDENTS RETAINED DUE TO PERFORMANCE ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ASSESSMENT

A student retained under the provisions of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee, and in accordance with Board Policy 2623.02, that demonstrates that they are reading at or above grade level, in accordance with the provisions of Policy 5410 - Promotion, Academic Acceleration, Placement, and Retention, will be considered for mid-year promotion. Such action shall be considered in consultation with the parent/guardian and the Student Intervention Team and with the concurrence of the building principal.

Using curriculum-based measures, the student must also demonstrate at or near grade level performance in all other academic subjects, other than reading, such that the Superintendent, in consultation with teachers, determines in the Superintendent's sole discretion that the student is academically prepared for the curriculum at the mid-year fourth grade level.

A student who is promoted mid-year to fourth grade will take State tests for fourth grade in all subject areas.

A student will not be eligible for mid-year promotion after the start of the fourth quarter in any school year without the approval of the Superintendent and the building principal.

A parent has the right to appeal the decision about their child's promotion, placement, or retention in accordance with the procedures included in Board Policy 5410 - Promotion, Academic Acceleration, Placement, and Retention.
