2431 - INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS

In order to maintain an effective program of interscholastic athletics, the District employs an athletic director and coaches who, in cooperation with the High School Principal, are to fulfill the responsibilities described below.

In order to maintain an effective program of interscholastic athletics, the District has created an athletic advisory council to act as the liaison between the coaching staffs and the Board and between the Board and the coaching staffs.

Membership

The Council shall consist of the following members:

  1. the Superintendent
  2. the High/Middle School Principals
  3. the Athletic Director
  4. members of the Board of Education

Functions

The Council has been given the responsibility to:

  1. establish the athletic program as an integral part of the educational program of the Niles City Schools; 
  2. control and regulate athletics by establishing uniform policies consistent with District aims and objectives and the policies of the Board;
  3. direct the athletic program according to the rules and regulations of the High School Athletic Association that are consistent with State and Federal law;
  4. continuously evaluate the interscholastic athletic program.

Restoration of an "Incomplete" Grade

If a student’s failure to meet the academic eligibility requirements is due to an “incomplete” given in one (1) or more courses which the student was taking during the grading period in question, the student may have his/her eligibility restored by the Executive Director’s office once the “incomplete” has been changed to a passing letter grade provided:

  1. the failure to complete the required coursework during the grading period was due to calamity day(s), family tragedy, or illness or accident as verified by a physician contemporaneous at the items of the incident; and
     
  2. the "incomplete" was given in accordance with Board/other governing board adopted policies and procedure and is applicable to all students in the school;
     
  3. verification that the student was unable to complete work due to calamity days, illness or accident that is contemporaneously confirmed by a physician or a severe family tragedy
  4. verification that the Incomplete was given in accordance with Board policy and available to all students
     
  5. confirmation that the work has been made up in accordance with Board policy and that grades have been recorded for all incomplete work
     
  6. verification that the Incomplete was not given to avoid a failing grade and that no extended time was afforded the student in order to avoid the failing grade
     
  7. the student's preceding grading period grade card
