2370.01 -  BLENDED LEARNING

The following guidelines are established in accordance with Board of Education policy and the rules of the Ohio Department of Education for students engaged in blended learning, which is defined as delivery of instruction in a combination of time primarily in a supervised physical location away from home and online delivery where the student has some element of control over time, place, path, or pace of learning and includes noncomputer-based learning opportunities.

  1. Personalization of student-centered learning models to meet the needs of each student shall be developed and implemented as follows:

    Students will follow the Niles City School District curriculum based on the Ohio Learning Standards.
  2. The quality of online curriculum delivered to students shall be evaluated using the following criteria and methods:

    Students will follow the learning expectations of the course. Students will be assessed on the regular school assessment or course assessment scheduled.
  3. Students shall be permitted to advance through each level of the curriculum based on demonstrated competency/mastery of the material. Assessment of each participating student's progress through the curriculum shall be completed by the teacher of record, department chairperson, and/or content facilitator, in accordance with the course assessment schedule.
  4. The Superintendent shall assign a sufficient number of teachers to ensure that each student has an appropriate level of interaction to meet the student's personal learning goals. The number of teachers assigned will be based on the number of students enrolled in the blended learning program. Each participating student shall be assigned to at least one (1) teacher of record.
  5. Each participating student will have access to the digital learning tools necessary to access online or digital content. Such tools will be assigned to students and documented/inventoried by the Technology Department
  6. Each school shall use a filtering device or install filtering software that protects against internet access to materials that are obscene or harmful to juveniles on each computer provided to or made available to students for instructional use. The filtering device/filtering software shall be provided and maintained in accordance with the following:

    The Child Internet Protection Act requirements and Board Policy 7540.03. Each student will be provided with a District-owned technology device and school email.
  7. The school shall provide a filtering device or software at no cost to any student who uses a device obtained from a source other than the school.
  8. The school will provide that teachers, administrators, and support staff have appropriate training in the pedagogy of the effective delivery of online or digital instruction. Such training will include using technology tools and District digital resources and shall be provided periodically.
  9. The school shall ensure that students have access to the internet and to devices students may use to participate in online learning.
  10. Each school shall monitor and assess student achievement and progress, as well as track attendance and participation, and provide additional services if necessary to improve student achievement.
  11. Each school and/or instructional staff shall periodically communicate with parents or guardians regarding student progress.
