8710 - INSURANCE

The Board of Education shall purchase with District funds the type and amount of insurance necessary to protect the District from major financial losses.

Insurance purchased shall include, but need not be limited to, the following:

  1. fire and extended coverage on buildings and contents

  2. comprehensive bodily injury, property damage on automobiles, buses, and trucks

  3. boiler and machinery

  4. broad term money and securities

  5. special coverage for equipment not ordinarily covered under a standard policy

  6. employee insurance coverage as specified in the Master Agreement(s) or by Board action

  7. worker's compensation coverage

  8. open stock burglary

  9. legal liability for Board members and employees

The Board shall in accordance with law ensure its employees against injury or death resulting in the courses of their employment and may also choose to:

  1. ensure the Board, members of the Board, officers, and students of the District against liability for damages for death, injury to person, or damage or loss of property caused by the negligent act or omission of the member, officer, or employee when acting within the scope of his/her office or employment;

  2. ensure against any liability arising out of the use of motor vehicles in connection with the conduct of automobile driver training courses according to law;

  3. ensure against any major liability arising from the use of a motor vehicle by an employee of the District in the performance of District business;

  4. procure liability and property damage insurance covering each school bus or motor van and accident insurance covering all students and other authorized passengers according to law.

Insurance for a given coverage shall be obtained at the lowest possible cost, assuming that service and company reliability are satisfactory. The Treasurer shall administer the insurance program.
