5462 - EQUIVALENT CERTIFICATE

The Board of Education recognizes the value of obtaining a high school diploma. It also recognizes the necessity at times to pursue a substitute course in the form of an equivalent certificate.

The Board will make known, to those inquiring, the availability and abide by the following guidelines from the Ohio Department of Education:

  1. The State Department of Education issues a "statement of high school equivalence". The statement is not a high school diploma nor can it be exchanged for a diploma.

  2. The Southern Local Board of Education is authorized to issue diplomas on the basis of GED tests to service personnel (other adult residents are not eligible) provided applicants meet the following requirements:

    1. service record properly documented;

    2. successfully complete the GED tests (i.e. score thirty-five (35) or above on each of the five (5) subtests and an average of forty-five (45) or above on the complete test battery;

    3. must have earned not less than eight (8) units of credit in an approved high school, four (4) units of which must have been earned in the Southern Local School District;

    4. in addition to the eight (8) units listed above, the candidate must have a minimum of one (1) unit of credit in American History and Government.* This is a statutory requirement and cannot be waived. The American History requirement may be earned by school attendance, by correspondence through U.S.A.F.I., by work under an approved tutor or the U.S.A.F.I. test in American History.

      *This requirement would be met if the candidate has earned one (1) credit in American History or one-half (1/2) credit in American History, and one-half (1/2) credit in American Government.

  3. Method of applying:

    1. Application should be made by letter to Miller High School.

    2. Test scores are accepted as official only when reported directly by official GED centers; the United States Armed Forces Institute; Directors of Veterans Administration Hospitals; and in special cases of the GED Testing Service.

  4. The final decision as to whether a diploma shall be issued rests with the Southern Local Board of Education.
