1400.53 - JOB DESCRIPTION –  STUDENT WELLNESS SPECIALIST

Position:                     Student Wellness Specialist

Reports to:                  Principal

Employment Status:   Regular/Full-Time

Description: The Student Wellness Specialist supports a positive school climate and promotes the academic and social-emotional success of all students. This role focuses on addressing student wellness needs, including mental health support, prevention education, crisis intervention, and connection to community resources.   The Student Wellness Specialist collaborates with administrators, counselors, teachers, families, and external agencies to strengthen a comprehensive system of student support.

NOTE:   The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Individual student meetings (SEL)
  • Crisis management
     
    • Family Communication
    • Outside counseling referral
  • Student Check-ins
     
    • Personal goal settings
  • Coordination with community agencies
     
    • Connecting students with resources (food, clothing, etc.)
  • Universal screeners for social-emotional needs for therapy
     
    • Needs assessment for teachers/students/families)
  • Signs of Suicide program implementation
  • SEL small groups & classrooms SEL lessons
     
    • Coping skills
    • Social skills
    • Peer relationships
    • Developing self-awareness
    • Mental Wellness
    • Substance abuse prevention
    • Healthy vs. unhealthy habits
    • Self-care strategies
    • Mindful & yoga techniques
  • Wellness Wednesdays Information emails
  • Classroom lessons on organization, time management, planning, and other executive functioning skills
  • Career exploration (assist with Virtual Job Shadowing and Youscience)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (education, social work, and school counseling)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, community partners, students and staff
  • Develop and maintain relations with parents and community partners to help aid in the success of the student
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience and student advising
  • Familiar with the culture and population that is served within the Southern Local School District
  • Strong networking ability

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Training in varied instructional design
  • Knowledge of child development and an understanding of age appropriate tasks
  • Background/knowledge base in methodology and supervised practice
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Computer/word processing skills

Equipment Operated:

  • Communications equipment
  • Technology equipment
  • School office equipment
  • Subject-specific equipment(e.g., lab equipment, graphing, calculators)
  • Fax machine

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional evening/weekend/summer work
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Occasional interaction with unruly students
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to work on all scheduled school days, except calamity days
  • Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop
  • Occasional travel, e.g., attending workshop outside of district
  • Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., computer keyboard, calculator, writing
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds
