1400.52 - JOB DESCRIPTION – CAREER AND COLLEGE COORDINATOR

Position:                     Career and College Coordinator

Reports to:                  Superintendent

Employment Status:   Regular/Full-Time

Description: The Career and College Coordinator conducts outreach and services to students and families to assist articulation and prepare for graduation and beyond. The Career and College Coordinator designs and directs activities to assist students with career and college planning in the 7-12 grades including academic preparation for college and career tech employment, meeting both graduation and college acceptance requirements. College searches, school and financial aid application, scholarship searches, ACT testing, recommendations, and transition to college and careers. The Career and College Coordinator works in coordination with the School Counselor, School Wellness Specialist, school administration, faculty, and community partners to assist in discovering their strengths and interests, explore career alternatives and job placement after high school, and/or finding institutions of higher learning which will meet those interest, strengths, and values.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in assessing educational needs, and provide connection to academic support services/access to tutoring when available.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school administration, support staff and community partners to provide opportunities for career and college exploration to meet grade-level needs and provide a venue for student success.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with community partners to aid in student success from a career and college to include mentorship, volunteer, and internship opportunities; career interest and development; scholarship opportunities; and positive community/school culture.
  • Coordinate college entrance test preparation and registration (ACT/SAT).
  • Assist with college application and acceptance process.
     
    • Application completion and follow-up
    • Assisting with students in account setup and navigation.
  • Facilitate college exploration and connections with college faculty, admissions, and financial aid.
  • Facilitate career exploration and connections with facility personnel, union representatives, and other career-related professionals.
  • Provide financial literacy information/financial aid process to students and families.
     
    • Assist with Financial Aid Process
       
      • Coordinate FAFSA and Financial Aid sessions for students and families
      • Assist students and families with the completion of FAFSA
      • Assist students with understanding Financial Aid Award Letter and Process
  • Present grade-level workshops and career and college prep information sessions to include:
     
    • Access to professional guest speakers via in-person and remote meetings, include classroom, small group, and individual meetings
    • College admissions counselor meetings
  • Organize college visits and educational /culture enrichment field trips to include small groups, grade level, special interest, and class trips.
  • Plan/coordinate mentoring panel discussions and information/inspiration speakers.
  • Attend meetings, webinars, and professional development trainings.
  • The Career and College Coordinator utilizes several venues to reach students and families, including individual conferences with students and families, small and large group presentations in workshops, classrooms, college visits, internships/mentorships opportunities, and panel discussions.
  • Maintains scholarship materials and applications.
  • Ability to work non-traditional school hours to meet the needs of students and families when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (education, social work, and school counseling)
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues, community partners, students and staff
  • Develop and maintain relations with parents and community partners to help aid in the success of the student
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience and student advising
  • Familiar with the culture and population that is served within the Southern Local School District
  • Strong networking ability

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills
  • Organizational and problem solving skills
  • Training in varied instructional design
  • Knowledge of child development and an understanding of age appropriate tasks
  • Background/knowledge base in methodology and supervised practice
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Computer/word processing skills

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional evening/weekend/summer work
  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue
  • Occasional interaction with unruly students
  • Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e., being prepared to work on all scheduled school days, except calamity days
  • Frequent requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop
  • Occasional travel, e.g., attending workshop outside of district
  • Frequent repetitive hand motion, e.g., computer keyboard, calculator, writing
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds
