1400.45 - JOB DESCRIPTION – MAINTENANCE EMPLOYEE
Position: Maintenance Employee
Reports to: Superintendent, Other Administrators
Employment Status: Twelve (12) Months
Description: The maintenance employee is self-motivated. Performs maintenance duties related to the school plant, school buildings, facilities owned by the district, equipment, and grounds operation.
Responsible for becoming thoroughly familiar with all aspects of maintenance as it pertains to the buildings, grounds, power plant, and wastewater treatment plant at all district-owned facilities. Combine skills of several trades to ensure safety, positive physical appearance, and upkeep of school property.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid driver's license.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least five (5) years of experience in custodial or maintenance.
- Demonstrates general knowledge regarding maintenance.
- Good health, high moral character, good attendance record.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of standard tools of the trade.
- Knowledge and experience of standard procedures, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry or a combination of these depending upon specific job assignment.
- Capable of lifting a minimum of forty (40) lbs., and moving up to 100 lbs.
- Physical capability of operating heavy-duty equipment safely.
- Demonstrated skill at keeping accurate maintenance logs and written records.
- Ability to read and interpret written maintenance manuals and written orders.
- Passing score on the qualifying test.
- Criminal investigations clearance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
In addition to the following, performs other duties in a timely manner as assigned by supervisor(s).
- Heating and air conditioning check. Monitor room temperatures.
- Opening building.
- *Snow, ice, and rubbish removal from parking lots and sidewalks. Repair and upkeep of these areas and playgrounds.
- Sewage treatment plant.
- Changing filters - entire complex.
- Replace light fixtures and light bulbs in the facility.
- Monthly check of playground equipment.
- *Outside entrance areas are swept and cleaned daily.
- Painting where necessary.
- General maintenance – i.e.: plumbing, electric etc.
- Installation and assembly of new and used equipment and furniture, chalkboards, pencil sharpeners, etc.
- Shipping and receiving.
- *Setup and teardown for special events.
- *Moves furniture.
- May be asked to install, haul, lift, remove, replace, replenish, repair, rebuild, and repaint.
- Performs maintenance and normal custodial cleaning duties as needed.
*Student workers may assist in these designated functions.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the administration.
- Interacts with students, staff, visitors, supervisors and colleagues in a positively responsive manner.
- Participates in in-service training programs.
- Works in accordance with district policies and procedures as well as State and Federal regulations for safety and maintenance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of school setting and commercial maintenance cleaning functions.
- Demonstrated skill in reading and mathematics sufficient to meet minimum qualifications, and to read and interpret maintenance/custodial communications.
- Service record that reflects positive interpersonal relationships, experience with school-aged children, and sensitivity to student needs.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
- Heavy duty floor cleaners, all hand tools, chemical mix systems, carpet and floor scrubbers, lifts for overhead work, floor buffers, mowers, trucks, tractors and other grounds/maintenance equipment.
- Maintenance on trucks, vans, tractors, mowers, drills, pumps and boilers.
- Maintenance and repair tools and equipment.
- Communications equipment (i.e. phone system, security system).
- Computerized maintenance monitoring controls and equipment.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue.
- Exposure to chemicals used in cleaning, grounds and maintenance work.
- Occasional exposure to high noise levels.
- Occasional interaction among unruly children.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with Board-issued contract.
