1400.37 - JOB DESCRIPTION - MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL ADVISOR

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Student Council Advisor, in performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the middle school principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma.

  2. Knowledge of student government and concerns.

  3. Leadership ability, as demonstrated in previous work record.

  4. Skill in interpersonal communications and in facilitating such communication among students.

  5. Ability to relate positively with staff, administration, parents, and student participants.

  6. Willingness to schedule and attend activities of the student council.

  7. Criminal investigations clearance.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

Certification in one or more fields of education by Ohio Dept. of Education.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Student Council Advisor provides adult leadership for the Student Council, which serves as a student government/leadership group for the middle school. S/He works to promote student leadership, student government activities, and student input into school operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Distributes applications to students interested in being a member of Council.

  2. Monitors the election of Council officers.

  3. Monitors and supervises Student Council meetings.

  4. Previews meeting agenda with student officers responsible for it.

  5. Confers with the middle school principal regarding Council issues and decisions.

  6. Facilitates meetings between the principal and Council president.

  7. Schedules and supervises student meetings every two (2) to three (3) weeks, or more often if specific projects are underway.

  8. Assists students to generate ideas for fundraisers and student events.

  9. Oversees one major fundraising activity as well as Council activity budgets and receipts.

  10. Assists students with the implementation of projects.

  11. Completes activity budget, pay-ins, and requisitions for expenditures.

  12. Assists students in selecting, planning, and carrying out selected service projects (i.e., food or clothing drives).

  13. Coordinates projects with local agencies and officials, such as Perry Co. Food Bank and American Heart Association.

  14. Chaperones after-school Student Council functions.

  15. Meets with principal regularly to discuss and finalize dates for Student Council activities.

  16. Other tasks as appropriate to activity and assigned by principal or Superintendent.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

Communications equipment (i.e., phone system, PA).

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Occasional exposure to students, some of whom may be unruly.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with negotiated agreement(s).
