1400.36 - JOB DESCRIPTION - MIDDLE SCHOOL YEARBOOK ADVISOR

RESPONSIBILITY:

The Middle School Yearbook Advisor, in performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the middle school principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma.

  2. Ability to use a 35 mm camera to take clear photographs.

  3. Successful previous experience in working with youth.

  4. Ability to relate positively with staff, administration, parents, and student participants.

  5. Criminal investigations clearance.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Certification in one or more fields of education by Ohio Dept. of Education.

  2. Prior experience with publishing/publications.

  3. Ability to use computer for word processing and/or layout.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Middle School Yearbook Advisor oversees the annual publication of the yearbook for grades 5-8 as a student publications experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Makes students aware of Middle School Yearbook activities through scheduling and announcements.

  2. Solicits students (approximately 5-10 per year) to work on the yearbook based on those who show an interest.

  3. Schedules and supervises student workers at various times as needed for pictures, paste-ups, and sales during the period August-June (i.e., conference periods, after school).

  4. Sets annual activity budget.

  5. Orders film and other necessary supplies.

  6. Maintains yearbook account records, including receipts, expenditures, purchases.

  7. Takes photographs, supervises student photographers, and/or arranges for other assistance in getting pictures taken.

  8. Assumes responsibility for the conduct of student workers while they are engaged in Middle School Yearbook activities either at their own school, or at other locations.

  9. Arranges for film development.

  10. Works with the yearbook publishing company.

  11. Supervises student layouts, paste-ups, and caption writing.

  12. Conducts and supervises yearbook sales.

  13. Inspects proof copies for accuracy.

  14. Works with school pictures vendor, photodeveloper, and yearbook publishing company to ensure a timely and good quality publication.

  15. Submits a roster of student workers to the middle school principal.

  16. Prepares announcements on the yearbook for the local media and/or school news as appropriate.

  17. Notifies principal of Middle School Yearbook activities, and of the annual completion of activities.

  18. Other tasks as appropriate to the activity and assigned by the principal or Superintendent.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. 35 mm camera

  2. Basic communications equipment (i.e., phone system)

  3. Typewriter/Word Processor

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITION:

  1. Interaction among crowds and students.

  2. Occasional exposure to unruly children/youth.
