1400.26 - JOB DESCRIPTION - COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER
RESPONSIBILITY:
The community volunteer, in the performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the principal and to the staff members as assigned by the principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Willingness to work with school-aged children in an educational setting.
Ability to work well with adults and children.
Ability to follow school policies and procedures, including standards of safety and confidentiality.
Knowledge and skills capable of enhancing the educational program for students.
BCI clearance if requested.
Other Desirable Qualifications:
Typing, filing, or computer skills.
Knowledge of office machines.
Attendance at volunteer orientation and training session(s).
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The community volunteer works to foster the achievement of students in our schools by providing services, talents, and/or additional adult contact.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Signs in and out of the school office when coming to volunteer.
Conferences with principal regarding skills desired, schedule, assignment, and progress in assignment.
Follows instructions of school staff in carrying out assignments, which may include:
operating a learning or listening center;
listening to a student or group of students read;
supervising an independent study assignment;
preparing charts, flash cards, worksheets, or other materials;
distributing and supervising the use of audiovisual equipment;
preparing manipulative materials;
supervising the writing process or individual writing of student(s);
organizing reference materials;
tutoring students for proficiency or other testing;
escorting students to or from activities in the school building;
setting up exhibits and displays;
typing materials and tests;
assisting with field trip planning or supervision;
assisting students in the use of computers or other technology;
assisting library staff with book shelving or check-out.
Refrains from grading papers, recording grades, or working with school records due to confidentiality considerations.
Follows school code of conduct and refrains from taking disciplinary actions against students.
Refers discipline problems to a teacher or principal.
Refrains from having sole supervisory responsibility for playground or classrooms.
Refrains from providing first aid, and refers first aid problems to appropriate school personnel.
Attends parent and volunteer training sessions when possible.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Office and instructional machinery.
Computers and related equipment.
Communications equipment (i.e., phone system).
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Occasional exposure to high noise levels.
Occasional exposure to unruly students.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: As arranged with principal.
