1400.22 - JOB DESCRIPTION – ASSISTANT COACH/JUNIOR HIGH COACH
Position: Assistant Coach/Junior High Coach
Reports to: Head Coach/Athletic Director/Principal
Employment Status: Regular
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
Evaluation: Evaluated once annually by those administrators that supervise.
RESPONSIBILITY:
The assistant coach, in the performance of his/her duties is directly responsible to the head coach of the sport, and to the athletic director and principal.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma.
- Successful experience in coaching or athletic participation, as indicated on previous job evaluations or letters of recommendation.
- Criminal investigations clearance.
- Current training in sports medicine, health, and safety, in accordance with O.A.C. 3301-27-01, and O.R.C. 3313.53.
- Employment record indicating competence in interpersonal relationships and communication skills.
- Physical stamina/capacity sufficient to work with students on assigned sport, including demonstration of skills.
- Ability to relate positively with student athletes, parents, school administration, and coaching staff.
Other Desirable Qualifications:
Experience or special interest in health education, physical education, sports participation, or related areas.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The assistant coach provides coaching for a given sport at a given level or area (i.e., reserve, freshman, middle school, defensive line, etc.) in the assigned season(s). S/He is responsible for the development and conduct of student athletes under his/her supervision. S/He works with the head coach in developing a program approach and philosophy that is consistent at all levels.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Carries out duties delegated by the head coach.
- Demonstrates loyalty to the head coach and to the program, even if this means altering one's own philosophy and/or coaching pattern.
- Attends all meetings of the coaching staff.
- Conducts assigned scouting visits.
- Assumes responsibility for the conduct and supervision of students assigned to him/her from the beginning of the activity until all athletes have dressed and left for home.
- Assumes responsibility for equipment issued to him/her, or to the students under his/her supervision.
- Assumes responsibility or assists with practices and other duties related to coaching the sport.
- Plans practices and game sessions so that a coach is in the building or on the field at all times during play or practice sessions.
- Assumes responsibility or assists with securing all dressing rooms, equipment, facilities, and school building(s).
- Accompanies students under his/her supervision in buses to and from athletic events where buses are used.
- Requisitions needed supplies and equipment from the athletic director.
- Informs players and their parents in writing of rules and expectations for team members.
- Requires physical examinations of all participants before first practice session, using the OHSAA "Student Participation Form"; provides these completed forms to the athletic director.
- Sees that all injuries/accidents are treated and reported to the principal on the Injury Report Form.
- Submits a tentative roster of players to the head coach, athletic director, and principal for eligibility purposes. This list is due ten (10) school days before the first contest and should contain names of players in alphabetical order, grade, height, weight, game jersey number, and letters status.
- If delegated by head coach, notifies the media promptly of contest results.
- Prepares information on players for the athletic banquet.
- Maintains a visible and positive image of the team, sport, and program in the school and in the community.
- Inspects area or field to be used for games or practice, ensures its safety, and informs athletic director of any problems needing attention.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the head coach, athletic director, or principal.
- Attend end of season banquet. If Coach is unable to attend the banquet due to catastrophic event, must be preapproved by AD, or will result in 10% reduction of supplemental pay.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS:
- Knowledge of the sport and ability to communicate this knowledge to student athletes.
- Skill at coaching and developing a sports program through various levels of participation (middle school, reserve, varsity).
- Positive interpersonal relationships and ability to serve as a positive role model of the sport for student athletes.
- High standards of conduct, including restraint from tobacco use and disrespectful language.
- Knowledge of current rules for the sport as published by OHSAA.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
- A variety of athletic equipment associated with the sport including training equipment, conditioning equipment, and field equipment.
- Communications equipment (i.e., phone system).
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Occasional exposure to high noise levels and equipment noise.
- Interaction among crowds and students, who may be unruly at times.
- Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with Board-issued contract.
