1400.21 - JOB DESCRIPTION – HEAD COACH

Position:                                 Head Coach

Reports to:                              Athletic Director/Principal

Employment Status:                Regular

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

RESPONSIBILITY:

The head coach, in the performance of his/her duties is directly responsible to the athletic director and principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma.
  2. Successful experience in coaching or athletic participation, as indicated on previous job evaluations or letters of recommendation.
  3. Criminal investigations clearance.
  4. Current training in sports medicine, health, and safety, in accordance with O.A.C. 3301-27-01, and O.R.C. 3313.53.
  5. Employment record indicating strong organizational skills and competence in interpersonal relationships and communication skills.
  6. Ability to plan overall program and oversee staffing and work of assistant coaches.
  7. Physical stamina/capacity sufficient to work with students on assigned sport, including demonstration of skills.
  8. Ability to relate positively with student athletes, parents, school administration, and coaching staff.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Previous experience as an assistant coach.
  2. Certification in one (1) or more field of education by Ohio Dept. of Education.
     
  3. Experience or special interest in health education, physical education, sports participation, or related areas.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The head coach oversees the athletic program for a given sports area in the assigned season(s). S/He coordinates the overall approach, philosophy, and rules for the sport, as well as the work of assistant coaches and other support staff. S/He is responsible for special attention to development of a program for the sport across various levels (i.e., middle school, reserve, varsity).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Promotes the best interests of the school and District in the given sport through cooperation with the athletic director, other coaches, boosters, and the school administration.
  2. Oversees the assignment and work of assistant coaches to carry out a consistent program philosophy and approach.
  3. Meets frequently with the athletic director and with assistant coaches.
  4. Sets rules for student athletes consistent with conference and District rules, and assumes responsibility for the enforcement of rules and consequences for rules violations.
  5. Assumes responsibility for the conduct of his/her team while they are engaged in school-related activities and while they are onsite at their own school or other schools.
  6. Schedules practice sessions and submits a schedule of practices to the athletic director and principal.
  7. Provides students and their parents with written notice of team rules and expectations.
  8. Checks eligibility of students before participation.
  9. Ensures that a member of the coaching staff is present for all conditioning sessions, practices, games, and times before or after these events when students are onsite at school facilities.
  10. Accompanies team in buses to and from all athletic events where buses are used.
  11. Requisitions needed materials and equipment from the athletic director.
  12. Requires physical examinations of all participants before first practice session, using the OHSAA "Student Participation Form"; provides these completed forms to the athletic director.
  13. Assigns appropriate staff to first aid responsibilities and sees that all injuries/accidents are reported to the principal on the Injury Report Form.
  14. Inspects area or field to be used for games or practice, ensures its safety prior to use, and informs athletic director of any problems needing attention.
  15. Submits a tentative roster of players to the athletic director and principal for eligibility purposes. This list is due ten (10) school days before the first contest and should contain: names of players in alphabetical order, grade, height, weight, game jersey number, and letter status.
  16. Assumes responsibility for care of all equipment before, during, and at the end of each season. Also, prepares an inventory and files with the athletic director within ten (10) days after the season ends.
  17. Notifies the media promptly of contest results.
  18. Prepares an accepted list of officials with the athletic director.
  19. Prepares a team budget in cooperation with the athletic director prior to the start of the season.
  20. Develops a scouting schedule and makes scouting assignments to coaching staff.
  21. Provides feedback on the performance of assistant coaches to the athletic director and principal at the end of each season for the purpose of evaluation.
  22. Prepares information on players for the athletic banquet and attends banquet. If Coach is unable to attend the banquet due to catastrophic event, must be preapproved by AD, or will result in 10% reduction of supplemental pay.
  23. Oversees the keeping of team statistics.
  24. Assumes responsibility for collection insurance premium fees, and other fees (i.e., Pay to Play) and turns fees in promptly to the athletic director.
  25. Maintains a visible and positive image of the team, sport, and program in the school and in the community.
  26. Performs other duties as assigned by the athletic director or principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of the sport and ability to communicate this knowledge to student athletes.
  2. Skill at coaching and developing a sports program through various levels of participation.
  3. Positive interpersonal relationships and ability to serve as a positive role model of the sport for student athletes.
  4. Knowledge of current rules for the sport as published by OHSAA.
  5. High standards of conduct, including restraint from tobacco use and disrespectful language.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. A variety of athletic equipment associated with the sport including training equipment, conditioning equipment, and field equipment.
  2. Communications equipment (i.e., phone system).

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Occasional exposure to high noise levels and equipment noise.
  2. Interaction among crowds and students, who may be unruly at times.
  3. Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
