1400.20 - JOB DESCRIPTION – TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR
Position: Transportation Director
Reports to: Superintendent
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
Description: The transportation director has the responsibility to supervise the overall school transportation system for the District, including the transporting of students to and from school, to and from extra-curricular trips, and the maintenance and supervision of all Board-owned fleet equipment.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
RESPONSIBILITY:
The transportation director, in the performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma.
- Previous experience as a school bus driver/mechanic, or heavy vehicle driver/mechanic.
- Ability to supervise and work with transportation staff.
- Ability to organize, work with the administration and the public, and keep written records.
- Criminal investigations clearance.
Other Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the District area and roads.
- Certification in H-D Truck and Auto repair.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Devises annual routing plan and stops in accordance with Ohio Pupil Transportation procedures and School District policy.
- Provides Superintendent with a schedule of all bus routes and stops and a list of students assigned to each bus.
- Assigns drivers to routes in accordance with the negotiated agreement and with route staffing needs.
- Schedules bus driver meetings as needed and bus in-service and preservice training sessions.
- Adjusts bus routes when necessary and informs the Superintendent and Board of any route changes.
- Schedules and assigns drivers to approved extra-curricular trips, in accordance with negotiated extra-trip procedures.
- Schedules and assigns drivers to special education transportation routes when needed.
- Obtains substitutes for drivers who are absent.
- Maintains accurate records and makes necessary reports of:
- bus mileage per day for each bus
- number of days of bus operation
- oil and gas consumption per day
- accidents, accident support data, and insurance claims
- annual inventory of busses, supplies, and equipment
- purchases
- driver certifications and licenses
- repairs and parts used per bus
- transportation costs
- bus inspection results
- Completes all other reporting required by the State Department of Education, State law, or District policy.
- Secures gravel and maintains bus turnarounds.
- Secures necessary parts and supplies for bus maintenance.
- Secures an adequate supply of oil and fuels.
- Makes recommendations regarding bus specifications and purchases.
- Submits requisitions for approval prior to ordering parts, supplies, fuel, or equipment.
- Develops specifications and works with vendors in securing quotes for major purchases of fuel and tires.
- Repairs busses and other fleet equipment/vehicles as needed or requested.
- Keeps the garage in order as to stocking, storage, and ordering needs.
- Periodically checks the mechanical conditions of all vehicles.
- Oversees routine maintenance checks by drivers.
- Supervises drivers in keeping buses clean and orderly.
- Schedules and completes preventive maintenance on all vehicles.
- Prepares vehicles for annual inspection.
- Reports to the Superintendent any abuse or neglect of vehicles.
- Completes an annual evaluation of each transportation staff member.
- Works with the Superintendent to resolve any personnel problems involving the transportation staff.
- Makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding bus staffing needs and new transportation personnel to be employed.
- Helps substitute drivers by showing them the routes and assigning them to a mentor driver.
- Assign prospective bus drivers to a trainer for their on-the-road portion of preparation.
- Works with drivers and principals on bus discipline procedures and sees that discipline problems are promptly reported using Discipline Report Forms.
- Checks roads and equipment and makes recommendations to the Superintendent about conditions which might warrant the closing of schools.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the operation of large vehicles and their mechanical and maintenance requirements.
- Physical capacity to perform work on heavy vehicles.
- Ability to perform unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance and repair work.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
- Busses, trucks, and vans.
- Fueling station.
- Repair station, lifts, and associated equipment.
- Electronic testers, electronic drills and tools, and gauges.
- Small and large hand tools.
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to fuels and chemicals which require protective measures and equipment.
- Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and extreme weather conditions.
- Occasional work with heavy vehicles under adverse conditions.
- Occasional exposure to children who may be unruly.
- Occasional exposure to body fluids and tissue.
