1400.19 - JOB DESCRIPTION - MECHANIC

Position:                                 Mechanic

Reports to:                              Transportation Director

Employment Status:               Regular/Full-time

Description: The mechanic assists the transportation director and his/her staff through direct work in repairing and maintaining busses and other school vehicles.

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

RESPONSIBILITY:

The mechanic, in performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the transportation director and is indirectly responsible to the Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma.
  2. Previous experience as a mechanic involving heavy vehicle work.
  3. Physical capacity and ability to perform repair work on heavy vehicles.
  4. Ability to perform skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled repair and maintenance tasks as evidenced on qualifying test.
  5. Ability to process and maintain a commercial Driver’s License including all endorsements and state requirements to transport students.
  6. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the transportation staff.
     
  7. Ability to keep written records and logs.
  8. Criminal investigations clearance.
  9. Certified as an On-Board Instructor.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

Vocational or other trade school certification in vehicle mechanics.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Secures necessary parts and supplies for bus maintenance.
  2. Submits requisitions to the transportation director for necessary parts, supplies, fuel, or equipment.
  3. Repairs busses and other fleet equipment/vehicles as needed or requested.
  4. Assists to keep the garage in order as to stocking, storage, and ordering parts.
  5. Periodically checks the mechanical conditions of all vehicles.
  6. Assists with routine maintenance checks by drivers.
  7. Assists with bus cleaning and interior repair/replacements.
  8. Completes preventive maintenance on all vehicles in accordance with District schedule.
  9. Keeps the transportation director fully informed of the mechanical condition of all District vehicles.
  10. Prepares vehicles for annual inspection.
  11. Reports to the transportation director any unsafe conditions or abuse or neglect of vehicles.
  12. Keeps accurate maintenance and repair records.
  13. Assists with maintenance of bus turnarounds.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned by the transportation director or the Superintendent.
  15. Attend all OBI meetings.
  16. Provide training for new bus drivers.
  17. Provide recertification for experienced bus drivers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of the operation of large vehicles and their mechanical and maintenance requirements.
  2. Physical capacity to perform work on heavy vehicles.
  3. Ability to perform unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance activities.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. Busses, trucks, and vans.
  2. Fueling station.
  3. Repair station, lifts, and associated equipment.
  4. Electronic testers, electronic drills and tools, and gauges.
  5. Small and large hand tools.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Exposure to fuels and chemicals which require protective measures and equipment.
  2. Occasional exposure to extreme temperatures and extreme weather conditions.
  3. Occasional work with heavy vehicles under adverse conditions.
  4. Occasional exposure to children who may be unruly.
  5. Occasional exposure to body fluids and tissue.
