1400.18 - JOB DESCRIPTION – SCHOOL BUS DRIVER

Position:                              School Bus Driver

Reports to:                          Transportation Director

Employment Status:             Regular/Full-time

Description:The school bus driver is responsible for the safe transportation, to and from school, of students assigned to his/her route(s). S/He is responsible for the overall care and operation of vehicle(s) used in school transportation services.

NOTE:   The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

RESPONSIBILITY:

The bus driver, in the performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the transportation director and indirectly to the school administration, including the principals and Superintendent.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent (GED).
  2. Being of legal age (section 3327.10 of the revised code).
  3. Being physically qualified (Rule 3301-83-07).
  4. An annual driver record check (Rule 3301-83-07 of the Administrative Code).
  5. Being licensed as a school bus operator.
  6. Completing pre-service and in-service training (Rule 3301-83-10 of the Administrative Code).
  7. Physical capability of appropriately lifting and managing handicapped pupils when necessary.
  8. Possessing or upgrading skills through formal and/or in-service training related to transportation of the handicapped.
  9. A report of the State Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation and/or county or local law enforcement agency may be required.
  10. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  11. Ability to understand and follow oral and written route sheets and instructions, and to prepare required transportation reports.
  12. Ability to maintain safety standards, order, and discipline among a large number of passenger students while driving.
  13. Ability to communicate orally in person or via communications systems such as bus radio or telephone.
  14. Experience in driving a school bus.
  15. Ability to perform routine safety checks, fueling, and pre-trip on the bus.
  16. Criminal investigations clearance.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of District area and roads.
  2. Knowledge of first aid.
  3. Knowledge of the operation of large vehicles and their mechanical requirements.
  4. Prior work with children or youth.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Obeys all laws and regulations established in the Ohio Pupil Transportation Laws and Regulations publication.
  2. Drives school vehicle(s) on a number of assigned routes or extra trips, picking up and discharging students at designated locations.
  3. Supervises the behavior of students as passengers on the bus by correcting misbehavior before it becomes a major problem, and by utilizing conduct referral forms to report to the school principal violations of the bus conduct code.
  4. Maintains in writing a current seating chart, route log, and posted bus conduct rules.
  5. Makes passenger and mileage reports and any other reports required by the transportation director or Superintendent.
  6. Does inspection of bus following each run, and reports vandalism promptly to the school principal.
  7. Cleans bus on a daily basis, ensuring that lights and windows are safe and that litter is disposed of appropriately.
  8. Services own bus including fueling, and checking the oil, water, lights, and tires.
  9. Assumes responsibility for the mechanical condition of the bus and report deficiencies or failure to the transportation director on the proper form.
  10. Reports all accidents, minor or major, to the proper law enforcement agency.
  11. Refuses to allow unauthorized persons to get on or ride the bus.
  12. Follows assigned route and makes assigned stops; receives prior approval of the Superintendent before any route changes are made.
  13. Runs route on schedule.
  14. Reports, on the appropriate form, any students who were not picked up due to road conditions, and turns this listing over to the principal of the affected school.
  15. Participates in disciplinary conferences when requested to attempt to solve bus behavior problems.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Interacts with students, staff, visitors, supervisors, and colleagues in a positively-responsive manner.
  2. Participates in annual, required in-service training programs.
  3. Works in accordance with District policies and procedures as well as State and Federal regulations for school transportation services.
  4. Responsibility for the confidentiality of student data.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the administration.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of the operation of large vehicles and their mechanical and maintenance requirements.
  2. Demonstrated skill in reading and mathematics sufficient to meet minimum qualifications, and to read and interpret materials used in the job.
  3. Service record that reflects positive interpersonal relationships, experience with school-aged children, and sensitivity to student needs.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. School buses.
  2. Equipment used in servicing of school buses, i.e., fuel station, air station.
  3. Communications equipment (i.e.,bus radio).

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Exposure to driving conditions associated with rural roads, including non-paved conditions, wash boarding, and erosion of surfaces.
  2. Occasional exposure to road hazards including ice, snow, flooding, and other extreme conditions.
  3. Occasional exposure to high noise levels.
  4. Occasional interaction among unruly children.
  5. Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
