Position: Custodian
Reports to: Building and Grounds Supervisor
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
Description: The custodian performs unskilled and skilled maintenance, repair, and cleaning on school buildings and grounds. S/He combines skills of several trades to ensure the cleanliness, safety, positive physical appearance, and upkeep of school property.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
RESPONSIBILITY:
The custodian, in the performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the Building and Grounds Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous work experience in commercial cleaning, maintenance, or related field.
- Skill in the use and care of standard tools of the trade, and of heavy-duty cleaning equipment.
- Knowledge and experience of the standard procedures, practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical, plumbing, and carpentry trades, or a combination of these depending on the specific job assignment.
- Capability of lifting a minimum of 40 lbs., and of moving up to 100 lbs.
- Physical capability of operating heavy-duty cleaning equipment safely.
- Demonstrated skill at keeping accurate maintenance logs and accurate written records.
- Ability to read and interpret written maintenance manuals and written orders.
- Ability to communicate, and to operate communications equipment (i.e., phone system).
- Driver’s license and ability to operate maintenance vehicles.
- Passing score on custodial qualifying test.
- Criminal investigations clearance.
- Must be able to work without supervision.
Other Desirable Qualifications:
- Basic industrial safety training.
- Certification in any area of heating and ventilating and/or controls operation, in sewage treatment plant operation, and/or electrical or plumbing license.
- Successful training in the use of computerized controls and maintenance systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains the safety and working operation of all physical plant systems, including heating, ventilating, sewage treatment, plumbing, and electrical.
- Sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and burnishes floors on a regular time schedule.
- Orders, inventories, and replenishes supplies, materials, and equipment needed for work.
- Empties and cleans waste receptacles daily or more often if needed.
- Keeps windows clean and replaces glass as needed.
- Assist in moving and arranging furniture and equipment.
- Secures building after school and when needed by turning off lights and locking doors and windows.
- Replaces light bulbs, and cleans fixtures regularly.
- Maintains equipment and materials used in work.
- Performs minor maintenance work such as repairing chairs, desks, and tables; unclogging drains and fixtures; cleaning and replacing filters in the heating system.
- Keeps school facilities and grounds picked up, swept, mowed, trimmed, and maintained in a systematic, timely, and organized fashion.
- Performs comprehensive summer cleaning and maintenance as scheduled by the supervisor including cleaning, repairs, and painting.
- Clears walkways, driveways, and parking areas of snow and rubbish.
- Makes frequent daily inspections of the building, reports noteworthy situations to the supervisor, and clears away any safety hazards.
- Cleans and disinfects restrooms and fixtures: floors, sinks, urinals, commodes, and commode seats.
- Exercises appropriate precautions during contact with hazardous chemicals and/or bodily fluids.
- Maintains unobstructed hallways, passageways, or exits.
- Makes daily inspection of the building for vandalism or graffiti; removes graffiti promptly.
- Cleans and dusts classroom areas, walls, and chalkboards and trays regularly.
- Immediately reports to the supervisor the need for repairs, and unsafe and dangerous situations or circumstances.
- Takes responsibility for cleaning, setting up, and dismantling extra-curricular activities to include athletic and building use activities.
- Work cooperatively with outside specialists dealing with maintenance items.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interacts with students, staff, visitors, supervisors, and colleagues in a positively-responsive manner.
- Participates in in-service training programs.
- Works in accordance with District policies and procedures as well as State and Federal regulations for safety and maintenance.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the administration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of school setting and commercial cleaning functions.
- Demonstrated skill in reading and mathematics sufficient to meet minimum qualifications, and to read and interpret maintenance/custodial communications.
- Service record that reflects positive interpersonal relationships, experience with school-aged children, and sensitivity to student needs.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
- Heavy-duty floor cleaners, chemical mix systems, carpet and floor scrubbers, lifts for overhead work, floor buffers, mowers, and other grounds/maintenance equipment.
- Maintenance trucks and vans.
- Maintenance and repair tools and equipment.
- Communications equipment (i.e., phone system, security system).
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
- Exposure to chemicals used in cleaning, grounds, and maintenance work.
- Occasional exposure to high noise levels.
- Occasional interaction among unruly children.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with Board-issued contract.
