1400.13 - JOB DESCRIPTION – LIBRARY MEDIA AIDE
Position: Library Media Aide
Reports to: Principal
Employment Status: Regular/Full-time
Description: The library/media aide oversees the library, computer lab, and/or media areas of the school to keep them open and operational for student and staff use.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
RESPONSIBILITY:
The library media aide is responsible directly to the building principal or other administrator assigned to his/her supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma.
- Aide’s certificate by the Ohio Department of Education.
- Ability to operate school audiovisual and other library media equipment.
- Minimum typing skills of 35 words per minute.
- Basic knowledge of computers and computer library applications.
- Ability to lift and store medium-sized equipment (lifting capability of 35 lbs.).
- Physical stamina sufficient to spend long periods of time standing, walking, or sitting.
- Passing score or better on qualifying library aide test.
- Manual dexterity sufficient for the operation of media/equipment.
- Ability to communicate orally in person or via communications systems such as telephone and intercom.
- Criminal investigations clearance.
Other Desirable Qualifications:
- Familiarity with child, adolescent, and young adult literature.
- Familiarity with library systems or previous work experience in a library.
- Successful training in word processing and computers.
- Prior work with children or youth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures safety of students.
- Plans and carries out a schedule of media events and monitoring of media/library areas of the building.
- Implements a plan for library budgeting, acquisitions, cataloging, and removal of outdated items.
- Answers media requests from students and school staff promptly.
- Works with staff to develop schedules for use of school media areas.
- Provides library materials for instructional use when requested, using resources outside of the school system if necessary (i.e., interlibrary loan).
- Maintains familiarity with the collection and brings relevant materials to the attention of staff and students.
- Provides activities leading toward the development of an appreciation of books and media (i.e., story hour, Buckeye Book award program).
- Maintains library/media areas in a neat and orderly manner, developing a pleasant atmosphere conducive to study and learning.
- Takes requests from staff members for new materials, and incorporates these requests into budget planning.
- Orders new books, media, and supplies.
- Maintains the collection keeping print and nonprint materials in good condition. Keeps file on such materials that need professional attention so that they can be pulled quickly for rebinding.
- Arranges book displays and bulletin boards.
- Maintains an up-to-date shelf list and card catalog.
- Takes a physical inventory of print and nonprint materials and equipment at the end of the school year.
- Arranges for year-end equipment maintenance.
- Distributes, supervises, and inventories audiovisual equipment.
- Assists with student reference projects.
- Checks books and materials in and out to staff members and students.
- Selects, trains, and supervises student and volunteer workers.
- Coordinates with teachers on media and materials that support units of study or special school activities.
- Assists with school duties including student supervision at lunch or bus time, and student travel to and from the media centers.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interacts with students, staff, visitors, supervisors, and colleagues in a positively-responsive manner.
- Participates in inservice training programs.
- Works in accordance with District policies and procedures as well as State and Federal regulations for school libraries.
- Responsibility for confidentiality of student data.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor or the administration.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of school setting and library operations.
- Demonstrated skill in reading and mathematics sufficient to meet minimum qualifications, and to read and interpret materials used in the job.
- Service record that reflects positive interpersonal relationships, experience with school-aged children, and sensitivity to student needs.
- Familiarity with audiovisual and computer equipment.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
- A variety of audiovisual equipment including various types of projectors, video cassette recorders and players, and televisions.
- Library equipment including word processors, computers, and copiers.
- Tools used in work or rebinding including paper cutter, small repair tools for media, and staplers.
- Communications equipment (i.e., phone system, media retrieval system, intercom).
ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue.
- Occasional exposure to high noise levels and equipment noise.
- Occasional interaction among unruly children.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
As specified in employee’s contract and in keeping with the negotiated agreement.
