1400.09 - JOB DESCRIPTION – SCHOOL NURSE

Position:                                School Nurse

Reports to:                              Principals/Superintendent

Employment Status:               Regular/Full-time

Description: The school nurse strengthens the overall educational process by assisting students to maintain wellness and good health habits. The school nurse’s purpose is to promote, protect, maintain, and improve the health status of students by encouraging cooperative efforts of students, student families, medical and dental practitioners, school staff, and the community.

RESPONSIBILITY:

The school nurse, in performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible to the principals and Superintendent.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Certification by Ohio Department of Education as a school nurse.
  2. Skill in interpersonal communications, and in facilitating such communication among students.
  3. Ability to relate positively with staff, administration, parents, and students.
  4. Criminal investigations clearance.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Previous successful experience working with children or youth.
  2. Previous experience in working with acute infectious diseases.
  3. Reliable work record.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Reviews periodically objectives, standards, and policies of the school health program and submits any revisions needed to the administrative team.
  2. Serves as a consultant to school personnel, parents, and children with regard to heath needs.
  3. Makes referrals where appropriate to other health agencies.
  4. Oversees immunization and communicable disease compliance and reporting.
  5. Keeps all school personnel aware of health trends and problems.
  6. Reviews medical, dental, and immunization reports.
  7. Follows up on screening programs and sees that standards are met.
  8. Counsels with students and, where needed, parents concerning individual health needs.
  9. Alerts proper personnel where adaptations are needed for individual health characteristics of a particular student.
  10. Makes educational presentations of health information to students and school staff.
  11. Serves as the health information resource person for the District.
  12. Maintains a file of current health education materials.
  13. Recommends policies and procedures for emergency care of students while in school.
  14. Assists with first aid and with training of school staff involved in first aid procedures.
  15. Works with community agencies for the effective utilization of their facilities and health education resources in the schools.
  16. Keeps abreast of research and current school health information through participation in professional development activities, workshops, community meetings, and related opportunities.
  17. Checks to see that emergency medical information is appropriately gathered and filed in each school.
  18. Maintains student school health records.
  19. Monitors availability of first aid supplies in each school.
  20. Orders school health supplies and equipment as needed in keeping with District procedures.
  21. Conducts routine screening programs of designated grade levels and students.
  22. Works to assist school personnel in the immediate treatment and disposition to home or hospital of students who are injured, ill, or found to have a communicable disease.
  23. Investigates communicable disease and nuisance outbreaks, and works to contain such outbreaks through parent notification, follow-up, and work with school personnel.
  24. Makes reports of communicable disease outbreaks to the county health department as required by law.
  25. Makes home visits regarding school heath concerns where required.
  26. Assists classroom teachers with health education in the areas of human sexuality education, communicable disease education, and drug, alcohol, and tobacco education. 
  27. Assists with administration of sports physicals and reporting/monitoring to the Athletic Director of student athletes who do not have physicals on file.
  28. Participates as a member of the Special Education Team.
  29. Administers prescription medication to students who are required to take medication during the school day.
  30. Abides by the ethics of the nursing profession.
  31. Performs other tasks as are in keeping with the negotiated agreement and assigned by the principal or Superintendent.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. Communications equipment (i.e., phone system, computer).
  2. School office equipment (i.e., copiers).
  3. School health equipment such as audiometers, otoscopes, and vision screener.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Exposure to students, some of whom may be unruly.
  2. Exposure to body tissues and fluids.
  3. Communicable disease exposure.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with Board-issued contract.
