1400.08 - JOB DESCRIPTION – DISTRICT LIBRARIAN

RESPONSIBILITY:

The District librarian, in performance of his/her duties, is directly responsible, to the principals of each school center.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Appropriate certification in school library/media, K-12, as issued by Ohio Department of Education.

  2. Employment record or references which indicate strong organizational skills and competence in interpersonal communications.

  3. Interest and expertise in working with school-aged children and youth.

  4. Criminal investigations clearance.

Other Desirable Qualifications:

Previous experience in the public school setting or in a library setting.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The District librarian is responsible for overseeing the organization and operation of the school libraries/instructional resource centers. S/He works onsite at the high school instructional media center, and works with other library staff in coordinating a library program for the elementary and middle school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Proposes policies and procedures for the overall operation of instructional media/resource centers.

  2. Works with school staff to implement policies and procedures for the libraries as adopted by the Board or administration.

  3. Selects library materials, using input from teachers and other staff.

  4. Evaluates the appropriateness of library materials for student or staff use.

  5. Plans for library acquisitions in keeping with annual budget and priorities identified by staff.

  6. Completes requisitions for books, periodicals, equipment, and library materials as recommended by staff.

  7. Maintains well-balanced libraries in terms of quantity and quality.

  8. Checks on the receipt of orders, and notifies the Treasurer’s office accordingly.

  9. Maintains close contact with child/adolescent literature and professional journals.

  10. Classifies books and other materials under various subjects and otherwise describes them so they may be identified through the cataloguing system.

  11. Assists students and staff members searching for information and materials.

  12. Works with students, teachers, and administrators concerned with curriculum planning.

  13. Serves as a liaison to and referral source for information outside the school (i.e., interlibrary loan, InterNet) where needed to meet a research need of a staff member or student.

  14. Instructs students in research skills, and in the use of the library.

  15. Consults with teachers with regard to materials required for units of study.

  16. Checks out videotapes, films, records, microfilms, an other media.

  17. Supervise clerical, assistant, and student librarians.

  18. Maintains an inventory of media equipment and resources.

  19. Schedules and prepares media for taping or viewing in the classroom (i.e., media retrieval system).

  20. Advises the administration as to library and media needs, including equipment replacement schedule.

  21. Works with library aides on staff development activities, and shares information with regard to library science and child/adolescent literature trends.

  22. Assists with special library events or library presentations in the classroom.

  23. Processes and marks new materials in keeping with library circulation system, and any other required designation (i.e., for Chapter 2).

  24. Keeps circulation and library use records.

  25. Maintains a record of annual library/media expenditures.

  26. Maintains records as to the extent of the library collection.

  27. Prepares reports required by Ohio Department of Education and the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. 

  28. Makes periodic checks on the safety and maintenance of media equipment, fixtures, and furnishings, and library spaces.

  29. Reports any problems with equipment or facilities to the principal.

  30. Performs such other duties as directed by the principal or Superintendent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Knowledge of child and adolescent literature.

  2. Knowledge of library classification, automation, and networking systems.

  3. Skill at maintaining current interest in the knowledge of information resources.

  4. Ability to organize and coordinate a consistent K-12 library operation.

  5. Physical capability of traveling from center to center.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  1. Electronic media retrieval system.

  2. Computer equipment, including printers, scanners, and CD-ROM.

  3. Videotape players and recorders.

  4. CD and Laser Disk players and recorders.

  5. Camcorders.

  6. Overhead projectors, film projectors, tape recorders, and other media equipment.

  7. Communications equipment (telephone, etc.), copier, and other basic school office equipment.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Occasional exposure to noise and high frequency noise.

  2. Occasional exposure to printer cassettes and other potentially hazardous substances.

  3. Prolonged use of keyboards and computer equipment.

  4. Occasional exposure to unruly students.

  5. Occasional exposure to blood, body tissue, and body fluids.
