5623 - MEDICALLY FRAGILE CHILDREN
Students who are identified as medically fragile will be provided "related services" as it pertains to a child’s Free Appropriate Education (FAPE) pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
Medically Fragile Students are those students in need of both a medical device to compensate for the loss of a vital body function and substantial and on-going nursing care to avert increased health problems or further disability.
Supervision and care will be provided for students who have a medical problem that requires or might require regular or emergency treatment. When such a student is enrolled within the District, the level of supervision and possible treatment is to be determined at a meeting attended by the parent or guardian, the teacher of the student, the principal of the school concerned, school psychologist, and District medical designee. A signed statement by the student’s physician stating his/her recommendations regarding treatment and supervision will be made available to the participants at this meeting.
An Individualized Health Plan (IHP) will be attached to each student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Information regarding necessary training for Exceptional Educational Needs (EEN) teachers for implementation of the IHP will be attached to the IEP. Related services will be provided under the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) rules for special education and under guidelines by the DPI in April, 1992.
