9270 - EQUIVALENT INSTRUCTION FOR COMPULSORY ATTENDANCE COMPLIANCE PURPOSES (HOME SCHOOLING AND NON-ACCREDITED SCHOOLS)

The Board offers tuition free enrollment to all school-age children with legal settlement within the Corporation's legal boundaries. In order to comply with the Indiana Compulsory Attendance law, the parent/guardian of a child between the age of 7 and 18 must be enrolled in an accredited school or be provided with instruction that is equivalent to the instruction made available by the Board.

If a parent/guardian does not enroll a child in an accredited school, the parent/guardian shall inform the Superintendent. The Superintendent shall inform the parents that later enrollment of the child in any of the Corporation's schools will be in accordance with Board Policy 5463 - Credits and Placement from Non-accredited Schools and the administrative guidelines associated with that policy.

A student who is being educated at a non-accredited or home school may enroll in one or more academic courses with the approval of the Superintendent. Such enrollments will be submitted to the State for funding purposes. The Superintendent may allow a resident student who is being educated at a non-accredited or home school and taking one (1) or more courses at a Corporation school to participate in one or more of the Corporation's co-curricular or extra-curricular activities provided s/he meets the eligibility criteria established for the activity.

The following requirements also apply:

  1. To Enroll:

    1. All school enrollment documents must be submitted in a timely manner including: Enrollment Form, Birth Certificate, Immunization Records, etc.

    2. An official transcript from the non-accredited or home school must be submitted along with course descriptions.

    3. Evidence must be provided each semester that indicates the student from a non-accredited or home school is participating in and passing three or more classes outside of Loogootee Community School Corporation.

  2. To Participate in Co-curricular Activities:

    1. Grades PreK-6

      Each of the enrollment criteria must be met. In addition:

      1. A student who is enrolled in a non-accredited or home school must be enrolled in and passing at least one (1) language arts block or one (1) math block daily at Loogootee Elementary School or Loogootee Middle School to participate in one or more of the Corporation’s co-curricular activities providing s/he meets the eligibility criteria established for the activity. Online classes do not meet this requirement. This includes all co-curricular regulatory agencies’ guidelines. Transportation fees and any related activity fees are the responsibility of the parent.

      2. To participated in one or more co-curricular activities, elementary-age students in a non-accredited or home school must be achieving at or above grade level in reading and math as determined by a school-based assessment (such as Star Reader or Star Math). The assessment shall be selected by the principal of the building the student will be enrolled.

    2. Grades 7-12

      Each of the enrollment criteria must be met. In addition:

      1. A student who is enrolled in a non-accredited or home school must be enrolled in and passing at least one (1) core class (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science) daily at Loogootee MS/HS for both semesters of a school year on campus at Loogootee MS/HS to participate in one or more of the Corporation’s co-curricular activities providing s/he meets the eligibility criteria established for the activity. The core class will be selected by the administration based on class sizes and Master Schedule factors. Online classes do not meet this requirement. This includes IHSAA and other co-curricular regulatory agencies’ guidelines. Transportation fees and any related activity fees are the responsibility of the parent.

      2. To participate in one or more co-curricular activities, Loogootee MS/HS students in a non-accredited or home school must provide Accuplacer scores that meet or exceed benchmark scores and pass prerequisite course exams as applicable.
