2430.001 - PARTICIPATION OF HYBRID STUDENTS IN ATHLETICS & EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Purpose

The Board of School Trustees establishes this policy to govern the participation of homeschooled students in interscholastic athletics in a manner consistent with Indiana law, guidance from the Indiana Department of Education, and applicable athletic regulations.

Authority

Participation in athletics/extracurricular activities by students is a privilege, not a right. The Board delegates authority to the Superintendent or designee to approve, deny, or revoke participation in accordance with this policy and applicable regulations.

Scope of Policy

This policy applies to online students enrolled in Grades 5 and 6 and seek participation in school-sponsored athletics/extracurricular activities.

Students in Grades 7 through 12 shall be governed exclusively by the eligibility rules and participation requirements established by the Indiana High School Athletic Association and applicable Board policies.

Eligibility for Participation (Grades 5–6)

Eligible online students in Grades 5–6 may be considered for participation, subject to the following:

  1. Residency

    The student is not required to reside within the Corporation's boundaries.
  2. Enrollment Requirement

    The student must be enrolled in the Corporation on a hybrid basis and shall:
     
    1. be enrolled in Corporation-approved coursework (online and/or in-person), and
    2. successfully participate in the State required full-time equivalence per academic semester, including required in-person attendance as determined by the Corporation.
  3. Enrollment

    Students who withdraw from the 5th/6th Grade Hybrid Program at any time will not be permitted to re-enroll in the program during their 5th or 6th grade year.

Academic and Conduct Standards

5th and 6th grade hybrid student-athletes shall:

  1. meet academic standards equivalent to enrolled Corporation student-athletes;
  2. demonstrate ongoing academic progress;
  3. comply with all expectations outlined in:
    1. LMS/LHS Student Handbook
    2. LMS/LHS Athletic Handbook

Failure to meet these standards will result in suspension or loss of eligibility.

Nondiscrimination

This policy shall be administered in accordance with all applicable Federal and State nondiscrimination laws.
