EMPLOYEE SICK LEAVE

3432 - EMPLOYEE SICK LEAVE

Employees are eligible to use paid sick leave in accordance with this policy. Any employee that is sick and will not be able to attend work on a scheduled work day shall contact their immediate supervisor as early as possible. Please reference the Staff Absence Management section of the staff website for detailed protocol information. Sick leave is available for use by employees for:

  1. illness of the employee;
  2. Illness or injury of the employee’s child under the age of eighteen (18) or age eighteen (18) or older if the child has a disability as set forth in Wisconsin Administrative Code section PI 11.02(2) and §115.76(5), Stats.;
  3. Serious health condition of a spouse, child, domestic partner, parent, sibling, grandchild or for those whom the employee has direct responsibility. This category shall apply equally to relatives whether by blood or marriage;
  4. Medical or dental appointments that cannot be scheduled outside of the employee’s regularly scheduled work hours;
  5. Legal matters that cannot be scheduled outside of the employee’s regularly scheduled work hours. (Does not include jury duty);
  6. Unavoidable emergency home repair (Acts of God);
  7. Graduation of child, spouse, or self from college or high school (one day per event);
  8. Weddings (one day per event for self or child);
  9. Bereavement/ Funeral Leave (up to five (5) days per occurrence with a maximum of three (3) occurrences per fiscal year);
  10. Honor ceremonies for the employee’s immediate family when approved by the District Administrator (two (2) events per year/maximum of two (2) days);
  11. Other emergencies not specified above as approved by the District Administrator.

The District Administrator or Principal may request a healthcare provider’s note verifying the employee’s illness in any case. In any case in which an illness causes absence from work in excess of three (3) working days, the employee will be required to provide certification from a health care provider of the illness. Absences of more than three (3) consecutive work days may be counted as leave under the FMLA (See Policy 3430.01).

Each member of the professional staff employed on a full-time basis shall be entitled to eight (8) days of sick leave as of the first day of employment of each contract year.

Carryover of Unused Sick Leave

Unused sick days may be carried over for use by the employee in future years. Employees may accrue up to a total of ninety (90) days of sick leave.

Accrued Sick Leave at End of Employment

Sick leave that is not used during employment will be lost and not paid out to the employee upon termination for any reason.

Personal Leave Charged to Sick Leave

School Year Certified Employees shall be entitled to one (1) day of personal leave each fiscal year. In addition, each school year certified employee will be allowed to use one (1) day per fiscal year of personal leave which shall be charged to accrued sick leave. The use of personal leave is conditioned upon approval of the supervisor and advance notice.
