8210 - SCHOOL CALENDAR
The Board recognizes that the preparation of a calendar for the instructional program of the schools is necessary for orderly educational planning and for the efficient operation of the District. Accordingly, the Board shall develop and approve the standard school year calendar.
The school calendar shall be developed in accordance with the following set of rules that will be adhered to every year in a consistent manner. These rules take into account all State requirements and negotiated holidays.
Length of the Standard School Year
- The school year consists of 180 days of class for students and 196 days of employment for teachers.
- The opening date for schools in the District may not be earlier than August 10th of each year.
- The school year shall be divided into two (2) semesters approximately equal in length.
Holidays and Vacations
- Six (6) negotiated holidays are incorporated into the standard year calendar: Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday following Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
When any of these occasions falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the preceding Friday or subsequent Monday, respectively, is taken as the school holiday. - Thanksgiving vacation consists of Thanksgiving Day and the following Friday.
- Winter vacation is based on the holidays of Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Other days are included in such a way that the vacation is not less than ten (10) school days.
- Spring vacation is a full Monday-through-Friday week.
Teacher In-Service Days and Workdays
- First Semester
- Teachers will report a minimum of five (5) workdays before the first student school day, with one (1) day designated as an in-service day. These days are designated as Preplanning days. Preplanning hours are scheduled per the negotiated teacher contract.
- One (1) District in-service day will be held during the first semester.
- Second Semester
- The District in-service day will coincide with President's Day.
- There will be at least one (1) day of post planning following the last scheduled student school day.
Exceptions to Standard School Year Calendar
- Exceptions to the standard school year calendar, such as year round school, may be developed.
Such exceptions shall take into account all State and District requirements, negotiated holidays, and vacation periods as specified in this policy. - Exceptions to the standard school year calendar, such as year round school, shall be approved by the Board.
