3121 - EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES
- Applicants for employment or reemployment must submit an employment application, a high school diploma (or equivalent) and/or official transcripts (if required), a copy of the social security card with legal name, and contact information for two (2) references.
- The District shall require a copy of the applicant’s original social security card for the following purposes: citizenship or immigration status validation, as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or other agencies; benefit processing, including membership in the Florida Retirement System, health insurance, or other benefits offered by the District; reporting requirements of the I.R.S., Social Security Administration, Florida Agency for Work Force Innovation and other agencies; criminal background checks required by law; or other purposes as directed by the employee, such as direct deposit of wages, etc.
- Candidates who have been offered a position must meet employment prerequisites including a negative drug test and background screening. Candidates must provide appropriate documents related to employment and job requirements. Specific requirements will vary with the position that the candidate is seeking.
- The offer of employment may be withdrawn if the candidate fails to submit required documents and/or fails to meet all criteria for employment in a timely manner.
- Former employees, who have been fingerprinted and screened by the District, will be subject to fingerprinting and drug screening if they have not been employed by the District for more than thirty (30) days. (Drug-free Workplace Technical Guide).
Documents Required for Employment
- Any person being employed by the District should have the following items on file in the Human Resources Office prior to being selected for a position:
- Employment Application, Reference completed by the Hiring Manager (minimum of two (2)), Social Security Card (copy), High School Diploma (copy), Official College Transcripts (when required)

SCHOOL BOARD OF BREVARD COUNTY DISQUALIFICATION FROM EMPLOYMENT
- Disqualification from employment - A person is ineligible for educator certification, and instructional personnel and school administrators, as defined in F.S. 1012.01, are ineligible for employment in any position that requires contact with students in a district school system, if the person, instructional personnel, or school administrator has been convicted of any felony offense prohibited under any of the following statutes:
- F.S. 393.135, relating to sexual misconduct with certain developmentally disabled clients and reporting of such sexual misconduct.
- F.S. 394.4593, relating to sexual misconduct with certain mental health patients and reporting of such sexual misconduct.
- F.S. 415.111, relating to adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation of aged persons or disabled adults.
- F.S. 782.04, relating to murder.
- F.S. 782.07, relating to manslaughter.
- F.S. 784.021, relating to aggravated assault.
- F.S. 784.045, relating to aggravated battery.
- F.S. 784.075, relating to battery on a detention or commitment facility staff member or a juvenile probation officer.
- F.S. 787.01, relating to kidnapping.
- F.S. 787.02, relating to false imprisonment.
- F.S. 787.025, relating to luring or enticing a child.
- F.S. 787.04(2), relating to leading, taking, enticing, or removing a minor beyond the State limits, or concealing the location of a minor, with criminal intent pending custody proceedings.

- This list is to be used as a guideline and does not constitute a complete list of all criminal activities which may be under consideration when an employment decision is being made.
REFERENCES AND VERIFICATION OF EMPLOYMENT
- It is the responsibility of the Hiring Manager to make telephone (not mail) contact with at least two (2) references from the applicant’s employment history. The reference must be a prior Principal, Director, Supervisor, or the HR department of the previous employer. The Hiring Manager should take notes of each reference contact, including time and date of call and the reference’s name and position on the BPS Reference Form. A reference from the most recent or current employer is required at the time of employment.
- Teacher applicants who do not have teaching experience should obtain a reference from the teacher who supervised student teaching. References should also be obtained from college professors and previous employers.
- Additional references and employment verifications may be required for specific positions or may be required to document experience for salary purposes. References from relatives, friends, and coworkers are not acceptable.
