2417 - COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCATION

The human sexuality curriculum provided by the District is based on F.S. 1003.42, 1003.453, & 1003.46. The procedures are as follows:

  1. Curriculum will be appropriate for the grade and age of the student and abstinence-based.
  2. All course materials shall be approved by the Florida Department of Education and the Board and shall be available for inspection by parents.
  3. Human sexuality will be taught as part of the science or physical education for grades 6th-8th.
  4. Human sexuality will be taught as a unit in HOPE, which is a high school graduation requirement.
  5. Schools should formulate an overall plan, which addresses the following areas:
     
    1. Who will be responsible for teaching the curriculum?
    2. How separate gender classes will be established where needed?
    3. Who will be responsible for communicating with parents concerning the curriculum?
    4. How parent education will be scheduled and who will be responsible?
    5. How requests for exemptions to the curriculum will be processed?
    6. Ensure materials used for instruction are those approved by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) and the Board and included in the District Sexuality Curriculum Guide.
  6. Communication with parents needs to include:
     
    1. a rationale for human sexuality;
    2. an explanation of the law;
    3. an explanation of the procedures which will be used at the school;
    4. an overview of the curriculum;
    5. an opportunity to preview the materials.
  7. Student exemption from human sexuality curriculum:

    Parental option is available. Parental request for student exemption is required in writing to the school principal.
