2411 - STUDENT DEVELOPMENT PLAN

These procedures are designed to insure proper balance between three (3) major areas of student development: 1) academic, 2) career, and 3) personal/social.

The mission of school counseling in the District is to prepare students to become capable, responsible, and contributing citizens. The program is designed to help all students develop their educational, social, emotional, career, and personal strengths. There is a commitment to maximize individual uniqueness and the development of human potential. The school counseling program is an integral part of the school's total educational program that assists students, parents, and educators in an effective progression through each school level and into adulthood.

The goals of the school counseling program are to:

  1. ensure that the school counseling program reaches 100% of the student populations;

  2. provide proactive and preventative interventions;

  3. ensure that counseling services are delivered by certified, professional school counselors;

  4. ensure that school administrators and school counselors protect the professional integrity of the counseling program;

  5. ensure that services are being delivered to students by following annual accountability procedures.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR

As student advocates, school counselors are committed to participate as members of the educational team. The counselor facilitates communication and establishes linkages for the benefit of students, with teaching staff, administration, families, student service personnel, agencies, businesses, and other members of the community.

As student advocates, counselors are responsive to the diversity in the schools and communities. The counseling program and the counselors serve all students and acknowledge that diversity and individual differences are valuable to all.

As student advocates, counselors are mindful of confidentiality in working with students. The professional school counselor:

  1. informs all counselees of the purposes, goals, techniques, and rules of procedure under which they may receive counseling at or before the time when the counseling relationship is entered;

  2. protects the confidentiality of information received in the counseling relationship as specified by Federal and State laws, written policies, and applicable ethical standards.

Counselors deliver the program through:

  1. Counseling

    1. Individual (providing students with maximum privacy in which to freely explore ideas, feelings, behaviors)
    2. Small-group (five (5) to eight (8) members, generally problem-centered or growth-centered discussions)
  2. Consultation

    Providing parents, teachers, and the community with information and skills to assist them in working with students.
  3. Collaboration

    Working with other members of the educational team to facilitate optimum student development.
  4. Coordination

    Serving as liaison between teachers, parents, support personnel, and community resources to facilitate successful student development.
  5. Case Management

    Monitoring of individual student’s progress in the three (3) areas of student development.
  6. Program Evaluation and Development

    Continuing assessment of the program making appropriate changes based on the needs of the students.
