2340.02 - NATIONAL STUDENT TRIPS

Approval

Participation in national student trips will be approved in advance by the Board of Education. The Board reserves the right to consider each request on an individual basis but will consider the following points:

  1. Frequency shall be limited, using one (1) per year as a guide.

  2. The defined educational goals and objectives.

  3. The number of days away from classes with five (5) being maximum.

  4. Whether the event is part of a competitive ladders.

  5. The manner in which the organization requesting the trip plans to fund the expenses and evidence that other organizations have been surveyed to determine their interests in the same kind of activity. The Board expressly discourages short term planning.

Funding

  1. Students becoming eligible for national competition by earning an award at the State level, or students who are presenters, delegates or performers, will be allowed partial District sponsorships. This would include a District chaperone/advisor as necessary, and monetary support in the form of one-third (1/3() of the cost paid by the District as a minimum. Additional resources may be used if available (such as student activity interest account, organizational treasuries).

  2. National trips involving conventions/conferences not based on competitive ladder entrance should be supported by funds other than District general budget monies. Self or group funding is appropriate.

    1. As a general rule, acceptable costs will be measured against similar costs for other approved student activities, taking into account the number of students involved, as well as the total cost.

    2. Only school-sponsored clubs or organizations may apply for fund-raisers or trips.

    3. Reserve funds must be available as a contingency to transport a child home with added parent or school costs in the event discipline, health, or other measures require such action.

    4. Student conduct/control is the responsibility of the sponsor with agreement and support from parent chaperones.
